How to choose a dog bed
There are a lot of dog bed options out there, and it can get confusing to know how to start your search. Before you jump right in, here are a few things to consider so you can get a better idea of what bed will be right for your dog:
Size – make sure to measure your dog so you’ll know what size will be right for him. A bed too big might leave him cold, and one too small might leave him uncomfortable. All our picks below come in a range of sizes so make sure to pick the right one for your dog. See our table below for a general guide in doggy bed sizes.
Age – a senior dog (7-9 years & above) will need a bit more support from their bed to keep them comfortable. Arthritis is common in older dogs, so an orthopedic bed made from memory foam will be best to keep him in a stable position, this prevents joint pain from too much rolling around. Younger dogs that usually play in or around their bed will benefit from having one with a non-slip surface, so the bed stays in place (or at least tries to!).
Durability – If you have an active dog who likes to chew stuff up, a bed made of sturdy materials like metal, resin, polyester or canvas would be a good choice. If you intend to keep the bed outdoors where it’ll be exposed to harsh weather (heat or rain), consider one that is waterproof and is elevated off the ground to keep it in good condition for longer.
Washing – regularly cleaning your dog’s bed is essential to prevent disease, so a bed that will be easy to clean is a must! A lot of beds come with a removable, machine-washable cover (indoor beds), or can simply be hosed off (outdoor beds).
Preference – if your dog likes to snuggle & keep warm while he sleeps, consider a soft bed made of shag or fleece, or one stuffed with cotton. If he likes sleeping outdoors and you live in a warm area, pick one that is elevated so that air can circulate around the bed.
